Merima was proud to be responsible for the impressive theatre, multi-complex outdoor decks, sports court, and kids’ club aboard the newly launched Mein Schiff 7, the latest addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet. Mein Schiff 7 is the seventh vessel where Merima has delivered comprehensive steel-to-steel interior solutions.

Mein Schiff 7 accommodates 2,534 passengers and 1,000 crew/staff members, with 12 restaurants and bistros, 15 bars and lounges, and a large wellness complex.

Sophisticated entertainment theatre

Central to Mein Schiff 7 is its three-story, 2,500 m² theatre, equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology and acoustics that evoke a concert hall experience. With extensive experience developing theatres for previous Mein Schiff vessels, Merima was well-prepared to deliver another first-rate venue that promises unforgettable entertainment for guests from around the world.

Additionally, Merima developed the Schaubühne auditorium, an intimate 150-seat venue located on the Starfish deck. This area hosts a variety of performances, from stand-up comedy to magic shows and acrobatics, enhancing the ship’s entertainment options with unique, smaller-scale events.

Despite significant challenges during the installation process, Merima’s world-class Project Managers successfully delivered a flawless space on time and within budget.

Outdoor deck – combining activity and relaxation

The ambitious 4,000 m² outdoor deck seamlessly blends sports, leisure, and entertainment. Designed as a multipurpose space, it includes areas for basketball, open-air movie screenings, and a spectator stand for live events. Merima’s design provides a vibrant mix of active and relaxing experiences for guests to enjoy.

A standout feature of the outdoor deck is the expansive children’s area, divided into four tailored sections to suit different age groups. Each section is equipped with age-appropriate, tailored materials, safety features, and engaging designs to ensure children have a fun and immersive experience.

The deck also features four large drink and grill bars, each manufactured in-house at Merima’s production facility. Integrated into aluminium and steel canopies, these bars provide shaded areas where guests can unwind and dine, adding a refined touch to the deck’s overall atmosphere.

On the upper deck, Merima was also responsible for smaller areas like the Teens and Game lounges, designed to further enhance the ship’s family-friendly appeal.

Effective problem-solving fosters strong partnership

A large portion of the materials used throughout the ship were produced in-house at Merima’s factories, complemented by our extensive network of partners and suppliers who provided innovative solutions to complex challenges. This collaborative approach proved highly effective, enabling us to deliver everything on time and to the highest standards.

The outdoor areas faced unpredictable weather, including a sudden snowstorm that brought 30cm of snow onto the deck as late as April. This added pressure to an already tight deadline. Yet, the team remained undeterred and we’re immensely proud to contribute to the creation of this remarkable ship and can’t wait for people to experience it just as we envisioned!

Merima was proud to be responsible for Royal Caribbean International’s jaw-dropping Aquadome and Royal Theatre areas on board its brand new vessel, the “Icon Of The Seas.” Billed as five times larger and heavier than the Titanic, Merima delivered steel-to-steel turnkey for a combined area total of 6,804 m².

Ready to set sail in 2024, the Icon Of The Seas hosts 5610 passengers and 2350 crew members with over 40 bars, restaurants, luxury cabins, and dazzling entertainment areas.

Creating the Aquadome is a feat that’s never been done before, and Merima is exceptionally proud to have delivered this extremely challenging project on time and put smiles on the faces of the ship owners.

The AquaDome is one of Icon of the Seas’ eight unique neighborhoods, boasting 220-degree ocean views, restaurants, and the one-of-a-kind Aqua Theater. Upon entering the shimmering AquaDome, perched at the top of the new Icon of the Seas, you’re immersed in a whole world of sensory discoveries – from athletes doing superhuman stunts in front of a shapeshifting waterfall to dining, coffee and cocktail options designed to tingle every taste bud. The lounge elevates your ocean views to new heights and lets you relax in luxury.

Merima is immensely proud of this showstopping area – to get it across the finish line meant that we had to be creative, solution-oriented, and develop techniques that had never been done before in shipbuilding. Many of the surfaces and materials were unconventional and required many creative solutions. Despite this, our team came up with all the right solutions and put huge smiles on our customers’ faces, and we’re pretty proud of the final result!

Fit for a royal - the best entertainment at sea

The main theater is a state-of-the-art venue that rivals theaters on land, spanning multiple decks and offering nightly entertainment from world-class performers. Merima was responsible for the whole 3,000 m² steel-to-steel area.

We have a heritage of building top-notch theaters in Finland, meaning implementing impressive technology, such as lifts and a tracking system to a fly space that allows performers to soar overhead, comes like second nature to us. Royal Caribbean’s entertainment team produces next-level original shows and Broadway favorites to treat guests to an incredible experience at sea.

World’s largest water park at sea

The Icon of the Seas is the home to the world’s largest water park at sea, with six slides on board. There’s an open free-fall slide, a 46-foot drop slide, family raft slides, and a pair of mat-racing slides. Having six slides on board is pretty unheard of, and we’re super proud to be part of this groundbreaking achievement.

To achieve this great result, we needed to implement a lot of tailored solutions, including the stair towers to enter the waterslides, all of the water park graphics and colors, wooden slats, and more! Selecting the right materials to meet the strict quality requirements and weather conditions while also matching the milieu wishes of the client was a massive challenge. Still, now everyone can safely say it was a major success!

Problem-solving leads to great customer partnerships

Many of the materials we used in the whole ship were made in-house at Merima’s factories, while we also relied on our extensive partner and supplier networks to provide creative solutions for challenging situations. This was a winning combination; everything was delivered on time and with absolute satisfaction. We’re so proud to be a part of this historic ship’s development, and we’re so excited for people to enjoy it the way we intended!

Spacious, relaxing public spaces provide wide open, unobstructed views throughout the ship. We built areas such as the mud room, library, laboratory, hair salon, hospital, staircases, main restaurant, observation lounge, club, gym, treatment room as well as the spa and sauna. Light, natural tones and wooden details were used in the interior. Special Merima features were Barrisol ceilings and decorative ceiling beams in main restaurant and mudroom. They were customized and manufactured in-house by Merima. We provided all the background installations hidden behind the walls and ceilings, including electrical work, ventilation, plumbing and insulation. We also supplied all hinged and sliding doors for the areas.

The main venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Swan Restaurant is a 150-seat restaurant that serves international and regional cuisine. With its open seating, big windows and soft tones, the restaurant is perfect for enjoying the views while dining.

P&O Arvia | The Epitome of a Sunshine Resort

Merima was proud to be responsible for P&O Arvia’s stunning Grand Atrium, with its widescreen ocean views becoming the focus of entertainment for the ship. The Grand Atrium is at the heart of Arvia and hosts a complete program of live events and entertainment with local buskers, pop-up talks, magicians, and performers. Spanning three decks, each level of the Grand Atrium offers guests a place to dine, socialize or relax, balancing larger sociable areas with more intimate spaces.

Merima delivered a visual turnkey project for the ship, covering 3500 m² and utilizing 95 different materials. With just four months to design, make the static calculations, create the prefabricated materials, and get them to the shipyard, Merima ensured the extremely challenging project went off without a hitch!

The Grand Atrium Staircase with expansive sea views

One of the highlights of the grand atrium is the brass and marble staircase. With warm tones, natural materials (including 1,200 m² of natural marble), and custom-made elements, including a stunning installation of metal ribbons lining the grand staircase, the dramatic space is the epitome of elegance.

The brass banister proved that Merima can work with even the most demanding materials to produce a surface that combines elegance, beauty, and practicality, as each material is carefully chosen to fit the safety and performance requirements of the ship.

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “With its elegant design, warm tones, and beautiful custom-made elements, the Grand Atrium on board Arvia will provide guests with the perfect backdrop to their holiday photos. The design has made the most of the magical effect of light at different times of the day, so whether guests want to enjoy a morning coffee or evening drink, the Grand Atrium will provide the most spectacular backdrop.”

Whether relaxing, dining, or being entertained, our sophisticated Grand Atrium is the place to be. Despite the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the special surface materials required for the project, we are proud of what we achieved and how we overcame the complexities and challenges that came with a project of this scale.

We’re extremely grateful and happy with the good cooperation we had with Meyer Werft and P&O, meaning that we could easily solve problems and we were able to save a lot of time on the project. Together we created a beautiful atrium for all 5200 customers on their way to the Caribbean to enjoy. We look forward to future opportunities to showcase our expertise.

Aurora Botnia | The New Era of Wasaline

M/S Aurora Botnia is a RoPax passenger ship commissioned by the shipping company Wasaline in 2021. It is a modern ferry with two cargo decks. It accommodates around 800 passengers and has a freight capacity of 1,500 lane meters for trucks and cars. We implemented the project with a mega-turnkey approach, covering over 6,000 m² of public interior areas including background installations, all cabins and cabin areas, as well as the wheelhouse and engine control room. The project was carried out from steel to finishing by Merima. The shipyard made the hull and we at Merima built everything else.

The project covered several areas, including a pub, bar, buffet restaurant, kids’ area, shop, café and several lounges as well as all staircases. We provided all the interior outfitting from floor to ceiling. Throughout the ship, we installed wooden details such as wood-paneled ceiling elements and seating groups, with magnificent wooden pillars and lighting rising from the center towards the ceiling.

Special features by Merima’s Inhouse production on the ship included the restaurant’s decorative wall, buffet area bar framing and cladding, divider wall, raised floors and profiles.

Cabins

This was the first time Merima was in charge of building and installing all cabins. The cabins were prefabricated in a warehouse near the shipyard. The vessel has passenger cabins, crew cabins and ADA-cabins, or barrier-free cabins for the disabled. The cabin modules included walls, ceiling, lighting, electricity, beds and the bathroom module with its piping and fixtures. Once the cabin modules were in their places on board the ship, floors were installed and connections to the electrical, piping and air-conditioning networks were made. The cabin solutions were tested before on-board installation at Merima’s factory premises in Helsinki.

Scenic Eclipse | The World’s First Discovery Yacht

Discovery yacht Scenic Eclipse is designed to deliver the experience of a lifetime for 228 guests, or a maximum of 200 in the Arctic and Antarctica. It has a gross tonnage of 17,545. As of August 2020, Scenic Eclipse is the first ocean-going vessel and flagship for the Scenic Group.

We completed the project on time and are proud of our excellent performance. The end result was a harmonious interior, and the customer was satisfied with our work throughout the project. The vessel is full of magnificent details, such as window boxes and high-polished stainless-steel parts. We had the honor of creating the ship’s welcome lobby, where you can sense the atmosphere of the entire ship as soon as you step on board. In the lobby’s background bar, a spectacular glass stand for bottles with backlighting built by us is a real eye-catcher.

The ship offers its guests the full experience with diverse activities and services. We had the pleasure of implementing an expansive 550-m² gold-leaf emblazoned spa with a range of wellness areas including saunas, steam rooms, relaxation lounges, temperature-controlled plunge pools, therapeutic pressure showers, a yoga and Pilates studio and a fully equipped gym. We had the honor to implement the on-board luxury boutique and the ship’s state-of-the-art theater, the most stunning feature of which is the starry sky-like ceiling lighting with tiny LED lights. The interior of the ship was designed to incorporate a wealth of high-quality materials, carefully considered details and unexpected shapes, all made possible by Merima’s expertise.

Restaurants

We delivered several restaurant areas to the ship. Each restaurant had its own details and theme. Azure Bar & Café offers indoor and outdoor seating for guests on its terrace, and Yacht Club features new food islands and enhanced outdoor and lounge seating to create a casual ambience. French Restaurant Lumière accommodates up to 35 guests in an elegant and modern atmosphere with a beautiful Champagne Bar, and Koko’s features regular tables and sunken seating, inspired by traditional Japanese dining practices. The ship also offers a cooking course, and there is a special cooking station for culinary masterclasses with a large TV screen showing the chef’s techniques in action and a hydroponic herb garden, among other elements.

Odyssey of the Seas is a 1,138-feet cruise ship with 16 decks. The ship accommodates 4,198 passengers at double occupancy and up to 5,510 passengers at full capacity, as well as a crew of 1,663. The scope of our work included all the interior outfitting. This was a great continuation to our cooperation with Meyer Werft, for whom we had worked on the same areas in previous ships. We delivered the areas to our customer successfully and in time, and we received compliments from the shipyard and end customer for navigating the turbulences of the pandemic.

We had the privilege of building the beautiful 1,300-m² Via Vista area on deck 5, with an Italian restaurant, a retail store, cruise-booking venue, wine bar and a smaller atrium named Via Vista. One of the area’s special features was the huge lighted dome. Our project team received a special mention and congratulations from the ship owner for our excellent performance and high-quality work. The owner was so satisfied by Merima’s overall performance that they decided to use our services to finalize extra works on the vessel, such as the hospital area and several other areas.

We delivered a total of four restaurant interiors on the ship: Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki, Mediterranean restaurant Coastal Kitchen, and the main restaurant Windjammer, where a buffet is served. Some of the special features we provided in these areas were the hand-painted wood imitation ceiling beams and , and metal ceiling screens in Teppanyaki.

Mardi Gras | Carnival’s New Flag Ship

Mardi Gras is an Excellence-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. It is the largest ship in the history of Carnival’s fleet, and it is the world’s first cruise ship to have an on-board rollercoaster. Mardi Gras measures 181,808 gross tons and has a maximum capacity of 6,500 passengers.

The project was carried out during a global pandemic, which caused extra challenges. In spite of this, Merima’s dedicated project team and supplier network succeeded in meeting the customer’s design and quality criteria. Close collaboration with the shipyard and the owner throughout the project lifespan was one of the key elements behind the project’s success.

Lanai deck

Lanai deck is an outdoor deck area going around the vessel on deck 8. It features a selection of bars, restaurants and pool areas. End customers can enjoy the laid-back pool areas while a wide range of restaurants for all tastes is just around the corner. The special features delivered to the Lanai deck included a bar counter, canopy ceiling, teak details and custom-made composite sunshades. Merima’s own factory produced the bar counters, container walls and ceiling beams in-house.

Mardi Gras

Main theater

The Mardi Gras main theater is built in two levels, with traditional theater-type seating with a comfortable recline. The interior was finished with neutral colors and warm tones, and wooden profiles were installed to surround the area.

AIDACosma | Impressive Ocean Liner for AIDA Cruises

AIDAcosma is a cruise ship measuring 337 meters in length and rising 20 decks into the skies. With 183,900 gross tons and a capacity of 5,200 guests, AIDAcosma is the largest cruise ship in the AIDA Cruises fleet. We implemented extensive outdoor areas, restaurants and bars for the ship.

The project included several decks such as Lanai, Sun, Patio and Pool deck, kids’ playground area and Calypso Bar. Unique special features implemented by Merima included infinity pools, video screen cladding and staging, and Slide End and Slide Start areas of the waterslide running from deck 20 to deck 16. As the project was implemented in an outside area that is exposed to sea water, high UV radiation and daily cleaning with water spray, we focused specifically on choosing the right materials (sea water-resistant metals, insulation between steel and aluminum) to ensure a high-quality delivery.

Restaurants

The project covered three restaurants on the ship: Teppanyaki, 4 Grill Counter and Sushi restaurants. The project was of particular importance due to the selection of materials and the quality requirements. The special features we implemented in the restaurant areas included silver-leafed special walls and room-height sofas. The project team and our supplier network worked closely together to handle these special materials and deliver the required quality. The successful takeover by the owner spoke for itself.
