Merima is introducing a renewed brand as we enter the next chapter of our growth. But when we brought our people together to introduce it, we didn’t start with a logo.

We started with Merima DNA. Where we came from. What we have learned along the way. What we want to hold on to as we grow. And where we still need to become better.

“The goal was never simply to create a new visual identity. We wanted to look at Merima as a whole: what we want to preserve as we grow, where we need to raise our ambition, and how that should eventually be experienced by our customers, partners and people.
The brand gives this ambition an identity and a language. The real work is turning it into everyday choices, behaviours, ways of working and interactions.”

Building on what is already here

Our work around culture and values started years before the brand renewal. This project has given us an opportunity to connect that work more closely with our brand and the wider Merima Experience. We are also open about the fact that we are not there yet. There are things in our leadership, tools and ways of working that we want to improve – and strengths in our people and culture that we want to hold on to as Merima grows.

Giving the next chapter a new expression

Merima’s identity has evolved as the company has grown. The renewed visual identity continues that evolution – respecting where we came from while creating a more distinctive, consistent and flexible expression for where we are going next.

Starting the next chapter together

The renewed brand was introduced internally at the Merima Experience Day. We looked at where Merima came from, what is changing around us, what we want to carry forward and where we need to raise our ambition. Equally important was giving people room to react, ask questions and discuss openly. The Merima Experience cannot be created by a brand project and handed to an organisation as a finished answer. It becomes real through the people who create it every day.

In one of the day’s activities, our people added their thoughts, experiences and individual marks to a graffiti wall. The renewed Merima symbol was then painted across it.

Growth also means letting go

As Merima has grown, the way the company is led has had to evolve too. For CEO Mikko Mäkiranta, that has also meant learning to trust people enough not to be involved in everything.

“One thing I have had to learn as Merima has grown is to let go. You can’t know everything, make every decision or be involved in everything anymore – and you shouldn’t.
I haven’t known every detail of this renewal or everything the team has been building. Seeing it come together has been a good reminder of what growth also means for me as a leader: trusting capable people, giving them responsibility and sometimes allowing yourself not to know exactly what comes next.”

The same applies to what happens after the launch. A renewed brand can provide direction, but making it real cannot belong to one project team, function or leader. It is built over time by many people, through the choices they make and the actions they take every day.

A renewal designed to happen responsibly

The renewed Merima identity will gradually become visible across our locations, digital environments, customer and partner touchpoints, workwear and other materials. The full rollout is expected to take approximately two years – intentionally.

A new logo is not a reason to throw away something that still works. Existing materials and equipment will continue to be used where it makes sense. Safety and workwear, for example, will be renewed as actual replacement needs arise, rather than simply because they carry the previous identity. The same principle will guide the wider rollout: making thoughtful use of what we already have and avoiding unnecessary waste.

Made together

Bringing the renewed brand and the Merima Experience Day to life took many people and partners.

The renewed Merima identity is now beginning to become visible. The Merima Experience behind it will take longer to develop. We are not presenting a finished version of Merima. We are becoming clearer about what we want to hold on to, where we want to become better and the experience we want to create as we grow.

Merima continues long-term growth journey in France

France is a key priority of Merima’s global operations and growth strategy. Merima is building its presence through expertise, mutual learning, strong execution, close collaboration, and a focus on reliable delivery.

The delivery of the world’s largest sailing yacht, Orient Express Corinthian, marks a major milestone in Merima’s expansion into the French shipbuilding market.

The delivery of Corinthian’s sister ship Olympian is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. The scope of the work Merima is delivering is similar to the Corinthian, and construction is currently proceeding ahead of schedule.

Merima has established a local team in France and is continuing to strengthen its role in the French shipbuilding industry through long-term partnerships and local collaboration.

More about Orient Express Corinthian

Corinthian is a combination of yacht and liner, a luxury vessel with 54 luxury suites, each of them offering panoramic sea views. More than simply a voyage, the Orient Express Corinthian invites guests to travel through the tangible world and the world of art, all in elegant comfort. The vessel was built entirely in France, and its stunning architecture is the work of Maxime d’Angeac studio. The Corinthian features groundbreaking “SolidSail” technology, consisting of three rigid sails, each spanning 1,500 square meters.

Merima invests in the future of the Finnish maritime industry with a new office and logistics centre at Blue Industry Park, Turku

Merima Oy is investing in the future and operational efficiency by building a dedicated logistics centre and office at a new maritime industry business park near the Turku shipyard.

Blue Industry Park is Europe’s leading maritime and manufacturing industry cluster, taking shape on the Turku shipyard site. The area brings together pioneers from their respective fields, with access to first-class logistics connections.

“Turku is an important hub for us, from which we serve customers around the world. Our new 4,000-square-metre facilities will improve our efficiency and further strengthen long-term collaboration with local and international operators in the Turku region,” says Merima CEO Mikko Mäkiranta.

Merima’s board of directors welcomes Mika Saariaho, an experienced business leader, to strengthen and accelerate the company’s growth journey. Saariaho has held various international leadership positions for over 20 years, with particular expertise in technology companies. Currently, Saariaho, Doctor of Science (Technology), serves as President and CEO of Raute Corporation, the leading provider of manufacturing technologies and full scale services for veneer, plywood and LVL production.

From internship to award-winning career: my decade-long journey at Merima

Kaisa joined Merima in January 2015 as an intern while studying for her Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA), working in the finance department. Little did she know that those eight weeks would shape the next decade of her career, full of challenges, opportunities, and growth.

Kaisa’s journey at Merima perfectly showcases the diverse career paths the company offers. Starting as an intern in the finance department, she transitioned through roles in project coordination, on-site project work in Japan and Germany, and eventually into her current position as a Project Controller. Her ability to adapt, learn, and excel across various roles highlights Merima’s commitment to fostering growth and exploring new challenges.

A passionate advocate for the company, Kaisa motivates and encourages her colleagues, always focusing on collaboration and improvement. It’s no surprise that her dedication and impact earned her the title of Employee of the Year 2023.

“Merima’s management team has consistently supported my development, often identifying new challenges for me before I even realized I needed them. Whether it’s offering training opportunities or encouraging me to explore different roles (even abroad), they’ve ensured I get new challenges so that my career is always evolving.”

Once her internship came to an end, Merima offered Kaisa the opportunity to join full-time as a Project Coordinator. A few months later, she was given the chance to support a project on-site in Japan for a couple of weeks, handling invoices and processing working visas. Those two weeks turned into 18 months.

During her time in Nagasaki, Kaisa completed two major projects with Mitsubishi. “Even though the working culture was vastly different, the support from my colleagues made it easier to navigate. I even picked up a bit of Japanese – though I’ve forgotten most of it now!

From Japan, Kaisa moved to Germany, where she started getting deeply involved in the project teams, managing purchasing, working directly with suppliers, spending more time on-site, and joining sea trials on the vessels Merima built. “Those two years in Papenburg were intense – we worked quite long days, but it was incredibly rewarding. It felt like we were part of something tangible and exciting, and the team was amazing!”

Kaisa is currently a Project Controller at Merima, focusing on overseeing project financials, including cost tracking, margin analysis, and regular reviews with project teams. She also handles all sales invoicing and uses her on-site experience to guide and support teams, ensuring collaboration between finance and project execution.

Culture and support: The Merima Way

Speaking of why Kaisa has spent a decade of her career at Merima, she adds: “One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Merima is the culture. There’s no strict hierarchy—if you need something, you can reach out to anyone, even the CEO.”

“We also focus heavily on collaboration. Finance teams at other companies might stay in the background, but at Merima, we actively work with project teams to find ways to make their lives easier. This approach led to a special moment last year when I was voted Employee of the Year. It’s rare for someone with a background in finance to win that award, but it felt great to know that my colleagues valued the support I provide.”

Mein Schiff 7 accommodates 2,534 passengers and 1,000 crew/staff members, with 12 restaurants and bistros, 15 bars and lounges, and a large wellness complex.

Sophisticated entertainment theatre

Central to Mein Schiff 7 is its three-story, 2,500 m² theatre, equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology and acoustics that evoke a concert hall experience. With extensive experience developing theatres for previous Mein Schiff vessels, Merima was well-prepared to deliver another first-rate venue that promises unforgettable entertainment for guests from around the world.

Additionally, Merima developed the Schaubühne auditorium, an intimate 150-seat venue located on the Starfish deck. This area hosts a variety of performances, from stand-up comedy to magic shows and acrobatics, enhancing the ship’s entertainment options with unique, smaller-scale events.

Despite significant challenges during the installation process, Merima’s world-class Project Managers successfully delivered a flawless space on time and within budget.

Outdoor deck – combining activity and relaxation

The ambitious 4,000 m² outdoor deck seamlessly blends sports, leisure, and entertainment. Designed as a multipurpose space, it includes areas for basketball, open-air movie screenings, and a spectator stand for live events. Merima’s design provides a vibrant mix of active and relaxing experiences for guests to enjoy.

A standout feature of the outdoor deck is the expansive children’s area, divided into four tailored sections to suit different age groups. Each section is equipped with age-appropriate, tailored materials, safety features, and engaging designs to ensure children have a fun and immersive experience.

The deck also features four large drink and grill bars, each manufactured in-house at Merima’s production facility. Integrated into aluminium and steel canopies, these bars provide shaded areas where guests can unwind and dine, adding a refined touch to the deck’s overall atmosphere.

On the upper deck, Merima was also responsible for smaller areas like the Teens and Game lounges, designed to further enhance the ship’s family-friendly appeal.

Effective problem-solving fosters strong partnership

A large portion of the materials used throughout the ship were produced in-house at Merima’s factories, complemented by our extensive network of partners and suppliers who provided innovative solutions to complex challenges. This collaborative approach proved highly effective, enabling us to deliver everything on time and to the highest standards.

The outdoor areas faced unpredictable weather, including a sudden snowstorm that brought 30cm of snow onto the deck as late as April. This added pressure to an already tight deadline. Yet, the team remained undeterred and we’re immensely proud to contribute to the creation of this remarkable ship and can’t wait for people to experience it just as we envisioned!

Merima was proud to be responsible for Royal Caribbean International’s jaw-dropping Aquadome and Royal Theatre areas on board its brand new vessel, the “Icon Of The Seas.” Billed as five times larger and heavier than the Titanic, Merima delivered steel-to-steel turnkey for a combined area total of 6,804 m².

Ready to set sail in 2024, the Icon Of The Seas hosts 5610 passengers and 2350 crew members with over 40 bars, restaurants, luxury cabins, and dazzling entertainment areas.

Creating the Aquadome is a feat that’s never been done before, and Merima is exceptionally proud to have delivered this extremely challenging project on time and put smiles on the faces of the ship owners.

The AquaDome is one of Icon of the Seas’ eight unique neighborhoods, boasting 220-degree ocean views, restaurants, and the one-of-a-kind Aqua Theater. Upon entering the shimmering AquaDome, perched at the top of the new Icon of the Seas, you’re immersed in a whole world of sensory discoveries – from athletes doing superhuman stunts in front of a shapeshifting waterfall to dining, coffee and cocktail options designed to tingle every taste bud. The lounge elevates your ocean views to new heights and lets you relax in luxury.

Merima is immensely proud of this showstopping area – to get it across the finish line meant that we had to be creative, solution-oriented, and develop techniques that had never been done before in shipbuilding. Many of the surfaces and materials were unconventional and required many creative solutions. Despite this, our team came up with all the right solutions and put huge smiles on our customers’ faces, and we’re pretty proud of the final result!

Fit for a royal - the best entertainment at sea

The main theater is a state-of-the-art venue that rivals theaters on land, spanning multiple decks and offering nightly entertainment from world-class performers. Merima was responsible for the whole 3,000 m² steel-to-steel area.

We have a heritage of building top-notch theaters in Finland, meaning implementing impressive technology, such as lifts and a tracking system to a fly space that allows performers to soar overhead, comes like second nature to us. Royal Caribbean’s entertainment team produces next-level original shows and Broadway favorites to treat guests to an incredible experience at sea.

World’s largest water park at sea

The Icon of the Seas is the home to the world’s largest water park at sea, with six slides on board. There’s an open free-fall slide, a 46-foot drop slide, family raft slides, and a pair of mat-racing slides. Having six slides on board is pretty unheard of, and we’re super proud to be part of this groundbreaking achievement.

To achieve this great result, we needed to implement a lot of tailored solutions, including the stair towers to enter the waterslides, all of the water park graphics and colors, wooden slats, and more! Selecting the right materials to meet the strict quality requirements and weather conditions while also matching the milieu wishes of the client was a massive challenge. Still, now everyone can safely say it was a major success!

Problem-solving leads to great customer partnerships

Many of the materials we used in the whole ship were made in-house at Merima’s factories, while we also relied on our extensive partner and supplier networks to provide creative solutions for challenging situations. This was a winning combination; everything was delivered on time and with absolute satisfaction. We’re so proud to be a part of this historic ship’s development, and we’re so excited for people to enjoy it the way we intended!

Spacious, relaxing public spaces provide wide open, unobstructed views throughout the ship. We built areas such as the mud room, library, laboratory, hair salon, hospital, staircases, main restaurant, observation lounge, club, gym, treatment room as well as the spa and sauna. Light, natural tones and wooden details were used in the interior. Special Merima features were Barrisol ceilings and decorative ceiling beams in main restaurant and mudroom. They were customized and manufactured in-house by Merima. We provided all the background installations hidden behind the walls and ceilings, including electrical work, ventilation, plumbing and insulation. We also supplied all hinged and sliding doors for the areas.
